So I had a look to these betavoltaic nuclear batteries that hit the news … and there is a lot of marketing bullshit !
On the engineering side, they don’t give any number apart for a picture that was rating a battery 100 uW. Now the problem is that whatever runs on 100 uW can run on an AAA battery for couple of years at least.
Dave Jones pointed it out pretty nicely together with debunking a bit of commercials on these batteries
Anyway, such devices exist for real, based on Tritium

But they have a shot circuit current of 60 nA and cost 3.5k$
On the Physics side, I think this guy got it pretty right
- the diamond envelope is not diamond anymore as carbon atoms decay in nitrogen, plus a consistent radiation damage to the crystalline structure incur due to the nucleus recoil when it emits an high energy electron
- there is a substantial contamination problem once these batteries are popular and disposed improperly, basically everything will become radioactive, including CO2 !
So if you are looking for a battery to power your brand new Arduino-based space probe, that’s what you are looking for !
Otherwise, the times when your Tesla will self charge are yet to come
